What is New in the IS codes: Recent Revisions of Which You should be Aware
What is New in the IS codes: Recent Revisions of Which You should be Aware.
Why Does Code Revision Matter?
The construction quality and safety is pegged on the Indian Standard (IS) codes. They change to accommodate new materials, new technology, lessons captured in the failures, and best sensed practices all over the world. As an engineer, it can be said that being on top of the recent changes to IS codes will make sure that once your project is compliant, it is also more intelligent and tougher.
Key Recent Changes in IS Codes of Civil Engineering (updated to 2023-24):
Note: BIS official portal is where latest updates are to be referred to always.
1. IS 456 Plain, and Reinforced Concrete-Code of Practice
Status: Revision of primary order
Future Changes:
- High-performance and self-compacting concrete features are provided
- Modifications of curing time factor and durability factors as per environment
- Better coverage of sustainability and green practices
Why It Matters: It is one of the most popular codes. The revision will greatly affect the mix design, durability checks and site control of quality.
2. IS 875 (Part 3): Wind Loads
Revised: 2023
Key Changes:
- A new map of the wind speed of India with updated climate data
- Border related to topography and terrain more accurately
- New pressure coefficients for compound forms
Why It Matters: The reevaluation of design loads in wind-sensitive regions has to be done now in high-rise and industrial buildings.
3. IS 16700: Requirements on structural safety of tall concrete buildings
- New detailed building design standards such as in height of buildings exceeding 50m
- Improved instructions on ductility, ruggedness and seismic soundness
- Promotes performance design Supporting what has been said before, it encourages performance-based design.
4. IS 1893 (Part 1): Requirement of Earthquake Resistant Design of Structures
- Seismic area zone factor revision
- Improved soil-structure interaction factors
- Irregular and podium structures now have new provisions
- Naturally the reason: Seismic design is changing. Carrying through with out-dated seismic factors may result in structural inadequacy of the code or unsafe buildings.
5. IS 383 -SPECIFICATION OF COARSE AND FINE AGGREGATES
- The use of M-Sand (manufactured sand)
- Gradation zones revised and revamped to have more control
- Directions on recycled aggregates
6. IS 10262-Guide to Concrete Mix Design
- The promoting product is Self Compacting Concrete (SCC) in why the explicit mix design is being promoted.
- Direction of fly ash, GGBS, silica fume and admixtures
- Durable performance and design verification and detail durability checks
7. IS1786 (High Strength Deformed Steel Bars Bars)
- Improved grouping of high-end like FE500D, FE600, FE550SD etc.
- Tightened standards of elongation and ductility
- QA/QC Bar coding and Traceability
What You to Do as an Engineer or Quality Assurance and Quality Control Officer:
- Design drawings of latest load codes
- Revise checklists and inspection formats of the update sites
- Update the trainings of your team on current curing, testing and materials requirements
- Maintain BIS subscription or consult the amendments made recently
- Make sure that vendors and suppliers adhere to new material specs
