FINENESS TEST OF CEMENT   AIM:           To determine the fineness of cement. APPARATUS REQUIRED: IS: 90 micron sieve  Weighing balance  Brush  Tray & Trowel Stopper jar SAMPLE: The cement taken should be finely ground material which of addition of requisite quantity of water is capable of hardening both under water and in air by the chemical interaction of its constituents with water and capable of binding together the appropriate materials. (Reference IS: 3535 - 1986) PROCEDURE:  Agitate the sample of cement to be tested by shaking for 2minutes in a stopper jar Stir the resulting powder gently by using a clean rod in order to distribute the fineness throughout the cement. Weigh approximately 10g of cement to the nearest 0.01g and place it on the sieve (W1) Agitate the sieve by swirling, planetary and linear movement until no fine material passes through it.   COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH TEST OF CEMENT AIM: To find out the compressive strength of cement. APPARATUS REQUIRED: 1. Cube mould (70.6mm X 70.6mm X 70.6mm) 2. Mixing pan 3. Trowel 4. Measuring Jar 5. Tamping Rod 6. Compressed test machine 7. Weigh balance SAMPLE: The cement to be used must be finely powdered material that when an adequate amount of water is added can harden both underwater and in the air resulting in a hardening of constituents through chemical interaction with water as also have a binding effect on the material that needs to be set. Formerly at 3535-1986 (Reference IS: 3535 - 1986 ) PROCEDURE: The standard sand confirming to IS 650 – 1966 is taken for the test. SOUNDNESS TEST OF CEMENT AIM: To identify how much volumetric expansion the cement sample goes through once it is set. APPARATUS REQUIRED: 1. Chatelier test equipment 2. Metal tray 3. Weighing balance 4. Measuring cylinder 5. Thermometer SAMPLE: The cement absorbed must be fine-ground material to which the addition of sufficient amount of water can harden both in water and in the air due to the chemistry of reaction of its materials with water and to have the capacity of binding together the right materials.   STANDARD CONSISTENCY TEST OF CEMENT AIM: To determine the quantity of water required to produce a cement paste of standard consistency. APPARATUS:  1. Vicat apparatus and plunger   2. Weigh balance STANDARD CONSISTENCY :  The standard consistency of the cement paste is defined that consistency, which will permit the Vicat plunger to penetrate to a point 5 to 7mm from the bottom of the Vicat mould when the cement paste is tested. FINNESS OF CEMENT TEST BY DRY SIEVE as per IS 4031 Part - 1 1. Scope : This procedure covers the test method for determining the fineness of cement by dry sieving as represented by the mass of residue left on a standard 90 micron IS Sieve. 2. APPARATUS : Sieve - 90 micron IS Sieve Balance - Balance - The balance shall be accurate to 0.1 percent of the weight of the test sample. Brush - A nylon or pure bristle brush, preferably with 25 to 40 mm bristle, for cleaning the sieve. 3. Test Procedure : Weigh accurately 100gm of cement (Wc) and place it on a 90 micron IS sieve. Break down any air lumps in a sample with fingers without rubbing them on sieve.  Place it on the sieve, being careful to avoid loss. Disperse any agglomerates. Fit the lid over the sieve.
