BULK DENSITY TEST OF COARSE AGGREGATE

BULK DENSITY TEST OF COARSE AGGREGATE

AIM:

The bulk density of the coarse aggregate could be found out.

BULK DENSITY:

Bulk density is that mass of substance by unit volume and is in kg/lit as per the requirement of this standard.

APPARATUS:

1. Measuring jar

2. Weighing Balance

3. Tamping Rod

4. Shovel

SAMPLE:

This test is usually conducted on dry aggregate that fee that does not contain any unwanted materials. See: Reference IS: 2386 (Part III) 1963).

PROCEDURE:

1. Weigh out to the nearest 0.1gm. 50g of the sample.

2. Pour the sample in an appropriate graduated cylinder and fill the sample in three layers.

3. The sample will be packed to be approximately one-third full with thoroughly mixing aggregate and tamped 25strokes of the rounded end of the tamping rod.

4. Another similar measure of aggregate would then be added and 25 strokes more of tamping would then be rendered.

5. Up to 25 times there should be the last layer filled to overflowing and tamping.

6. The aggregate has to be straightened with the straight edge on its top surface

7. The aggregate in the measuring jar shall have the net weight determined.

NOTE:

When testing very light materials care should be taken that not too much of the sample are bounced out of the top of the cylinder when it is tamped down.

CALCULATION:

Bulk Density = (Mass of the sample)/ (Volume of the sample)

Note Bulk density may be expressed as g/cc.

NOTE:

Acceptable Value- Bulk Density must not exceed 10g / liter
